Food safety department officials on Friday night sealed a restaurant in Arumbakkam 

CHENNAI: Food safety department officials on Friday night sealed a restaurant in Arumbakkam after a customer found a cockroach in his lunch. Sources said that Bala Kumar who ordered a meal in Hotel Vallavan found a cockroach and complained to the hotel authorities. Officials said Kumar saw the insect as he began eating.  "But restaurant authorities refused to accept his complaint and an argument ensued. Other customers joined him and refused to pay their bill," said an official.  Following the incident, restaurant authorities were forced to shut down the eatery till evening and re-opened at night.  Based on complaints from customers, food safety officials inspected the restaurant and found it was functioning in unhygienic conditions. They asked the restaurant authorities to improve the condition in 15 days. "The kitchen was completely unhygienic," said district food safety officer S Lakshmi Narayan. He said several cockroaches were found in the kitchen.
